Gum Disease
Bleeding gums can be a sign of gum disease, also known as periodontal disease. The primary cause of gum disease is bacteria that is found in plaque. When plaque is left to fester in your mouth, these bacteria will infect your gums.

Common Symptoms
There are common symptoms that can be used to identify this condition. These include:

  • Swollen, red or tender gums
  • Easily bleeding gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Panful chewing
  • Halitosis
  • Receding gums

Evaluation and Diagnosis
When you come to our dentist for a gum disease evaluation, measurements will be taken of each of your teeth. These will determine how much space there is between your teeth and your gums, any gum recession occurring, teeth loosening and signals of inflamed gum tissue. By taking these measurements, we can figure out how likely you are to develop gum disease, and we can diagnose the condition even when it is in its earliest stages. This makes it easier to treat.

Treatment
There are many treatment options available for patients with gum disease, including professional dental cleanings, improved at-home oral hygiene, antibiotic treatment, scaling and root planing or even surgery. Our practice offers both non-surgical and surgical treatment options.
